One of the biggest and best junior squash events on the calendar is on again, with significant prize vouchers up for grabs.

Sandgate Squash, a highly-regarded club in Junior Squash, throughout Brisbane and Queensland, will be hosting its annual Junior Classic Tournament, this November.

Sandgate Squash Centre manager, Nathan Turnbull, said this tournament, which was once the biggest prize money junior tournament in Australia, has been running annually, for the last 12 years with the support of their sponsor, Pat Barrett.

“We have, in recent years, changed the tournament structure to a prize event to get it on the Australian Squash Tour, so kids can get ranking points, both State and National,” Nathan said.

The Sandgate Squash Centre has produced multiple state and national champions and is home to top 100 International PSA players, such as Jess Turnbull, Rhys Dowling and Alex Eustace in their ranks. In August this year,  Jess Turnbull won the South Australian Open.

Two outstanding Sandgate Squash Juniors who will be competing in this year’s Junior Classic Tournament are Madison Lyon, who is Australia’s number 1 ranked under 15, and Katie Davies,  Australia’s number 1 ranked under 17 player.

“Katie Davies was successful in winning the under 19 division at last year’s Junior Tournament here,” Nathan said.

This tournament is open to all age divisions, from under 11s right through to under 19s, and is capped at 50 players. Draws with fewer than four entries will be combined, and only prizes for the combined division will be allocated.

Nathan Turnbull said the junior tournament was open to any junior squash players, not just members of Sandgate Squash.

“We have juniors from all over Australia enter in previous years and even had some international juniors fly over from New Zealand last year to compete,” Nathan said.

The centre boasts five traditional hard courts and one championship glass-back court and can accommodate viewing for up to 100 people. So head along and check them out.
