Family And Community Are The Focus Of The Boss Boxing Open Day

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ARE THE FOCUS OF THE BOSS BOXING OPEN DAY
Sat 16 Feb
Time : 10am
Address : 385 Zillmere Rd, Zillmere
Mark your calendar for Saturday 16 February for the Open Day celebrating the official launch of The Boss Boxing into our community.

Come along to enjoy the sausage sizzle, lucky door prizes and fun for the family while learning more about how The Boss Boxing programs develop a healthy mind, body and spirit in a safe multi-cultural environment.

Prevention of suicide and reduction of crime are two of the benefits to the whole community that come from “getting youth off the streets and into the gym” as founder, Sammy Leone says.

Sammy grew up around Sandgate and The Boss Boxing is born from Sammy’s longtime desire to ‘give back’ to the community the many positives that boxing brought to his own life.

Sammy saw this initiative of Pass on the Fire Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation as a great opportunity to engage young people in the community and offer everyone a great way to keep fit and active with classes for women, children and the general public as well as training for competitive boxers.

“Boxing gives structure and routine, builds self-esteem and is good for health and wellbeing. But we don’t just offer boxing – it’s a much more holistic approach with mentoring and linking in with local elders and existing services that assist with all kinds of issues including domestic violence and financial difficulties.”

Councillor for Deagon Ward, Jared Cassidy, has been a big supporter of The Boss Boxing since its inception and says it will offer great support to both indigenous and non-indigenous people right across the Northside.

“After meeting with Sammy I was able to provide The Boss Boxing with a grant of almost $5000 to get the gym up and running and really look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have in the community.”

As Sammy says - “The Boss Boxing is so much more than just a boxing club. It’s a place where youth can be supported, and mentored in a culturally safe and inclusive environment.”

The Boss Boxing Open Day starts at 10am on Saturday 16 February at 385 Zillmere Rd, Zillmere.
