It’s the end of an era for the Sandgate Pensioners and Superannuants League. Unfortunately, the group is winding down because of dwindling numbers, but they’ll be going out in style with a final Christmas concert.
League secretary and treasurer Gwen Jackson says the group had been in operation since 1948.
“It’s like a family to us, we get together every Monday, and we have concerts twice a month and sometimes we have bingo,” Ms Jackson says.
“It’s a social outing and it’s really important for everyone – particularly older people – to keep active. It’s better for your health to get out; you don’t want to stay home feeling moody.”
Deagon Ward councillor Jared Cassidy, together with State MP for Sandgate Stirling Hinchliffe, has provided the group with some funding so they can continue to hold meetings until the end of the year.
“Stirling and I have covered the group’s entertainment fees for the rest of this year and hire costs for the town hall,” Jared says.
“It’s the end of an era, really. This concert is a combined event for all our local senior citizens groups, but I think it will be a nice send off for the Pensioner and Superannuants League.”
Mr Hinchliffe said the group has been an institution across the 4017 and the surrounding areas. “After hearing the group had decided to wind up at the end of the year, it was only fitting to provide funding for them,” he says. “I’m delighted I could team up with Jared to ensure the group can see out 2018 with their traditional concert.”
The event will include a free morning tea, and time for attendees to catch up before the hour-long concert. There will also be raffles and lucky door prizes.
“Jared and Stirling have been very helpful and supportive, providing funding for the hall and the entertainment. All our members would like to say a big thank you to them,” Ms Jackson says.
“Sadly a lot of our group members have passed on or gone into homes, but it’s been a wonderful time here and we have all enjoyed it so much. It will be sad to see the group finish up.”
Ms Jackson added that the remaining members had pledged to keep in touch, “We’re going to meet once a fortnight at a café and catch up for a cuppa and a talk,” she said. “We all look after and support each other.”
The Seniors Christmas Concert will be held at the Sandgate Town Hall on Monday, 17 December from 10am. It’s open to the community and anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP to Jared Cassidy’s office on ph. 3667 6011 or Stirling Hinchliffe’s office on ph. 3639 9100.
