Arioso Chamber Ensemble Back To Perform

Sandgate Town Hall
Date: Sunday 30 Apr
Times: 2:30pm
A strong connection with Sandgate has meant a second opportunity for the Sandgate community to be entertained by this chamber music group.

The ‘Arioso Chamber Ensemble’ is returning to its inception place of Sandgate to perform an afternoon concert of classical music of the Baroque era.

The group last performed in Sandgate’s “Music by the Sea” festival in 2014. In fact, the group was formed for that particular concert and enjoyed working together so much that they have continued.

The group features Hungarian soprano Judit Molnár and Baroque instrumentalists Margaret Caley (Violin), Belinda Manwaring (Cello) and Janet Brewer (Harpsichord).

“Sandgate is known for its vibrant musical community, and the Sandgate Town Hall is a beautiful heritage venue. We thought it would be a great place for a Sunday afternoon concert,” says Margaret.

However, there is a personal connection with Sandgate — Margaret’s grandfather, who also played the violin, lived for many years at the Regis Sandgate nursing home. He entertained fellow residents until he was well over 90 years old.

Harpsichordist Janet Brewer’s grandparents also lived in the area for many years. She vividly remembers walking along the shorefront and through Sandgate and always being drawn to the Sandgate Town Hall.

The group performs chamber music, using original instruments. For many audience members, it is their first opportunity to see a harpsichord close up.

“ Each piece in the program has been chosen because it portrays a particular mood, ranging from joyful, exuberant cantatas by Telemann, through to the more reflective “Music for a While” by Purcell, to the grief and anger of Tartini’s violin sonata “Dido Abandoned,” says Margaret.

“When we rehearse and perform together we all contribute ideas to the overall musical interpretation and give each other feedback. It’s invaluable as an artist to have a group of like-minded colleagues to share our passion, give encouragement and motivate each other to improve.”
