No need to wait up late for Santa this Christmas. He’ll be jogging along the Sandgate foreshore! In fact, at 7am on Tuesday 25 December, up to three hundred Santas are expected for the Christmas Day parkrun, along with a host of glittery, tinselly and maybe even antlered, runners.
There will also be a costumed New Year’s Day parkrun.
This will be the third year in a row that these special parkruns have been hosted by Sandgate parkrun, which has just celebrated its sixth birthday with a super hero-themed event.
What’s more, runners can still go to the regular Saturday morning parkrun between Christmas and New Year’s Day, says event director, Vanessa Gibson. “We’re hoping for lots of costumes to put a smile on everyone’s face. It’s our gift to the community.”
And, the 7am starts should fit around busy schedules, “It’s after kids have opened Christmas presents but before the lunches and dinners, and 7am on New Year’s Day is a nice healthy way to start the year, and work off any party after-effects.”
Vanessa promises that her partner, event co-director Dean Gibson, will be eye-catching, “He’ll be in full Santa costume or maybe a Santa onesie.”
