New MARTIAL ARTS GYM FOR SANDGATE
Recent years have seen a surge in the popularity of mixed martial arts, and Sandgate is about to get in the ring to join in!

Robbie Paraha holds a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is excited about opening his first business, an Infinity Martial Arts Club in Third Avenue, Sandgate.

“I’ve been training for about 9 years, originally in kick boxing; then after I tried a few sessions of jiu jitsu I kind of fell in love with it,” Robbie says.

His franchise will offer a range of training options. “We will have three main styles; the Brazilian jiu jitsu, strength conditioning and boxing. The jiu jitsu classes will be open to kids from 2 years old,” Robbie tells us.

Different ages and types of people attend, and classes will be offered for kids to adults, as well as women-only classes. “It’s mainly people who want to build confidence or who want more fitness, or people who are tired of doing the same thing day-in, day-out at the gym.”

The training that Robbie has completed over the years has made him a high level competitor, and teaching others gives him great satisfaction.

“It’s more about giving back to others some of the lessons I’ve learnt, and helping to make a community environment is a really nice feeling,” he says.

Finding the right premises has taken several months, and he’s happy to have found their location in Sandgate. “It’s just a nice culture and atmosphere there. Everywhere you go people aren’t in a rush, and even if they are they are still willing to stop and say hello; it’s a good community. It suits our business and our personalities too, myself and my partner. It’s really relaxed and welcoming.”

Robbie intends to use the local environment to complement some of the training, and is happy to have the foreshore at the end of the street.

“For the strength conditioning and the boxing we can take people down [to the foreshore] at the drop of a hat. It’s looks like a nice place down there near the waterfront; I’m a bit excited for that!
