125 years of Memories of the Heart
Sandgate’s Sacred Heart Primary School will this month celebrate its 125-year anniversary with an occasion filled with nostalgia, community and family.

The event, Memories of the Heart, will let the community and current students see the changes in the school throughout the years, and how education has changed from 1893 to 2018.

Principal Julian Cotter says there will be fun and exciting things happening on the day for all ages in the community.

“The little ones will love the range of rides, jumping castles, baby animals, art and craft activities, and a mini disco,” Julian says.

“While parents can relax in the Laneway Bar or visit the cent auction for the chance to win some amazing prizes.

“As the day continues on, the beer garden will open and continue into the evening to reminisce with friends, old and new.”

There is also a range of food and entertainment on offer with a barbecue and sausage sizzle, and a variety of food trucks and stalls available to fill hungry bellies, while the entertainment will range from local students from St John Fisher College and St Patrick’s College, who will showcase their musical and theatrical talents.

There will also be a special performance by Taila Gouge, a finals contestant from season three of The Voice in 2014.

Julian says that the most important aspect of the day, however, is celebrating the rich history that Sacred Heart Primary School Sandgate offers the community and how the students and families, past and present, have built on the Mercy culture of compassion, justice, dignity, excellence, hospitality, stewardship and service.

“The day is important because it allows us to acknowledge the past and celebrate 125 years of excellence in teaching,” he says.

“Those who dedicated themselves in building a Mercy school can take pride in knowing our students today continue to be proud of ‘the school on the hill’.

“It’s important to thank those who have contributed to the spiritual, academic and cultural aspects of Sacred Heart as we continue these traditions.”
