The Sandgate Hawks will kick off the football season and their 75th anniversary year with the annual Anzac eve game on April 24.
President Aaron Widt said, “We kick start the season with our Anzac eve clash against Wilston Grange in Queensland’s premier competition — QAFL.
“The evening begins with a special Anzac ceremony involving the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) and past and present service personnel.
“This annual event is a very special occasion for our club and always draws a fabulous crowd,” Aaron said.
Event coordinator Belinda Davis said the Hawks reserves will form a guard of honour at the Anzac ceremony and the juniors will play a match at halftime.
“The Anzac eve match is always great for club spirit; it gets bigger and better every year,” she said.
The April 24 match will also be the first game played on the newly resurfaced main oval.
“The club is looking forward to showcasing the blockbuster match on our newly resurfaced main oval which will equal the best Brisbane has to offer,” Aaron said.
“We have been working closely with the Brisbane City Council, State Government and the AFL to execute upgrades to our community facilities including kicking nets, lighting, retaining walls, widening the driveway on the Lemke Road project, full oval re-turfing, over 20 new TVs, a new menu and change-room upgrades in line with the club’s strategic vision.
“This season Sandgate Hawks will field teams in the QAFL, senior women’s, colts, masters over 45s and over 35s, as well as our junior teams whose numbers have swelled beyond 400 with 25 teams including five all girls teams and the introduction of Kinderkick so that children as young as 3 can start enjoying the great game that is AFL.
“As a proud local, community club, we look forward to welcoming all new, current and former Hawkies to the Anzac eve match and the start of our 75th anniversary year,” Aaron said.
