Humans have a long history of being enchanted by shiny objects, and this tradition will continue on the first weekend in March when the North Brisbane Lapidary Club presents the 34th Annual Gem and Jewellery Festival at Bracken Ridge State High School.
Rachel Aubrey, speaking on behalf of the club, promises a multi-faceted event this year, with over 30 stalls for visitors to fossick about in. "I am excited to learn new jewellery making techniques and swap ideas with other members. Last year I enjoyed cuttlefish casting, lost wax casting and enamelling workshops."
The festival offers handmade jewellery for sale; rough and cut precious and semi-precious gems, crystals, even fossils! There will also be tools and machinery for sale, and demonstrations by the Australian Facetors Guild.
Rachel tells me that this year there will be a greater number of local gem and jewellery traders, offering the opportunity to purchase a unique Queensland gem, plus international specimens.
"They love the community spirit and willingness of members to help each other to produce a final piece."
Since ancient times, we have sought to adorn ourselves with jewellery made from precious metals and gems, with reasons ranging from religious and spiritual protections through to symbols of love, or statements of wealth. Sometimes just because it makes us feel good!
The Gem and Jewellery Festival brings people from near and far together to celebrate and wonder at these beauties offered from the earth. The potential to learn new skills in crafts such as lapidary, silversmithing, or jewellery making is on offer for all who attend the festival.
“ I look forward to using new skills to ‘push the boundaries’ and create my own unique finished piece, maybe even enter a piece into a club competition," Rachel says.
The event will also offer a barista to make you a lovely coffee, plus food including home-made sweets and jams!
