Plans are already well underway for Australia Day by the Bay on January 26, 2018.

Councillor for Deagon Ward, Jared Cassidy and Federal Member for Lilley, Wayne Swan are inviting locals to join the 2018 Australia Day celebrations, which will be held across three different locations in Sandgate and Shorncliffe.

Australia Day will certainly be very special for the people choosing to become Australians, with a Citizenship Ceremony held at the Sandgate Town Hall.

Registration will begin at 9am, with the ceremony, hosted by Sandgate Zonta, starting from 10.30am. Morning tea, hosted by CWA Sandgate, will follow and each new citizen will receive a free native plant to take home.

Upper Moora Park in Shorncliffe will be the scene of a classic Aussie barbecue from 1pm to 3pm. Everyone's favourite clowns Peebo and Dagwood will entertain the crowds, as well as the band 'Demon Drink'. Sandgate Hawks AFL club and the Sandgate Gators Cricket team will be hosting games and activities, plus there will be a free jumping castle and face painting, with the barbecue also being free.

The day will close with the famous Dick ‘Tosser’ Turner Billy Cart Races in Cotton Street, Shorncliffe from 3pm to 5pm, proudly supported by Cr Cassidy and State Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe.

“ Having the program at different locations and times throughout the day means people don’t miss a thing on Australia Day,”
Cr Cassidy says.

Mr Swan adds, “Australia Day by the Bay gives all members of the community the chance to participate locally and creates the opportunity for families to partake in activities that suit them.”

And according to Mr Hinchliffe, there’s no better way to celebrate Australia Day.

“All the events have become real 4017 traditions,” he says.
