‘Sandgate Art Society’ and ‘Shorncliffe Potters’ are hosting an exhibition and competition of art during the Easter weekend.
For lovers of art and for those looking for some motivation to get out the easel, camera or pottery wheel, this is your opportunity to get creative and produce that piece de resistance.
The ‘SAS on Sandgate Easter Art Show’ will be taking place at the Waterford Building at St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe from 13 –16 April. The event is sponsored by Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe MP.
“ The competition has been running for many years, but since 2009 it has been revamped to its current format,” says Sandgate Art Society President John Blackley.
“In past years, there have been around 150 pieces of art on show from about 75 artists”.
The art show aims to showcase the works of artists both near and far. Categories of art will be ‘Open 2D’, ‘Open 3D’, ‘Open Photo / Digital’ and ‘Emerging Youth Artists – under 16 years’.
This year the competition will be judged by two practising artists outside of the 4017 area, Wyn Vogel and Christa Coetzee.
Wyn Vogel is a professional ‘Installation and Mixed Media’ artist and curator in her gallery ‘Fish Lane Studios’, a gallery in West End.
Christa Coetzee is an artist with a studio in Clear Mountain who is involved in the ‘Creative Sanford’ and ‘Flying Arts’ groups. These groups are very proactive in art trails in the Sanford area.
The judges have never met each other and will be unfamiliar with the works of local artists. As local artist and Sandgate Art Society member Grace Cross says, “It will be a wonderful collaboration of two professional artists judging this year.”
Prizes will be presented by Stirling Hinchliffe MP on opening night, Thursday, April 13. The judges will also be there to comment on the awards. All art exhibited is original works, never exhibited before, and will be for sale over the weekend.
