Waitangi Day, the National Day of New Zealand, will be celebrated at Sandgate Post Office Hotel for the first time this February.
Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi which took place on 6 February 1840. Official celebrations are typically held at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, but there are also many other events throughout the country and the world that mark this historic event each year.
General manager at Sandgate Post Office Hotel, TJ Marshall, said the inspiration behind celebrating the day locally came from staff members who work at the hotel.
“We have several staff members who are New Zealander and of New Zealand descent and we thought, ‘why not celebrate their national day?’” Mr Marshall said.
This cultural celebration will cater for the whole family, making it a great opportunity to get together with friends and family. It’s also a dog-friendly occasion so feel free to bring along your canine friends so they don’t miss out on any of the fun.
“We want everyone to come down and join in the music and food for a great time,” Mr Marshall said.
“We will be having a local Maori group come in to do the Hakka, a traditional food blessing ceremony and then a New Zealand musician to perform throughout the afternoon.”
In addition to the cultural performances and music of the Waitangi Day event, there will also be traditional New Zealand food on the menu for attendees to enjoy during the day.
“We are doing a special menu for lunch featuring local seafood and some Waitangi Day favourite foods as suggested by our staff,” Mr Marshall said.If you’re staying for lunch, it’s a good idea to book a table in advance, via the website, as these can fill up fast.
