Local artist, Leah Gay, won the 7th Annual 4017 Community Art Show with her floral artwork “First Brush With Spring”. The prize was announced at the show’s opening night at Gallery 4017 by guest judge, Donagh Mengel.
The winning artwork combines a mixture of traditional painting and sewing techniques. It is a colourful, still life painting of a bunch of local, red bottle brush flowers in a vase. It has been created with gouache and oil pastel. Leah then used her sewing machine and vintage cottons to embroider the artwork and create layers of detail and texture into the artwork.
