WATERSPORTS IN SANDGATE
Brighton, Sandgate and Shorncliffe locals are lucky to be right by the seaside. On a sunny day, the waterfront is packed with joggers, walkers, families and friends; and when the wind is right, kiteboarders and windsurfers too. In fact, the bay is a hot spot for such water sports because it is easy to access and has shallow waters. It’s also protected by Moreton Island and typically receives onshore breezes throughout the summer – meaning great conditions.

Kiteboarding is particularly popular in the area. You’ll often see kites out near 19th Avenue at Brighton Beach, as well as between 7th and 8th Avenue, on Flinders Parade by the Sandgate swimming pool. Accordingly, there are shops that cater to a range of water sport needs.

Surf Connect started in 2005 and has helped to fortify a strong water sports culture in Sandgate and Brighton since; with particular focus on kiteboarding, windsurfing, and the new craze stand up paddling (known as SUP). Surf Connect sells and hires equipment and offers lessons; and is affiliated with Yachting Australia, the International Kiteboarding Organisation, and the Australia Surfing Institute.

People old and young can try kitesurfing, windsurfing or SUP and the Sandgate waterfront is the prime location to start.
